HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to recognize the students, alumni,
4faculty, and staff of North Central College as they celebrate
5the sesquicentennial of the school; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The first day of classes were held on November 11,
71861, at Plainfield College; the school name changed to
8North-Western College in 1864; the college moved to Naperville
9in 1870; on May 17, 1870, the cornerstone was laid for Old
10Main; and in 1926 the name again changed, to North Central
11College; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The College founders believed that Christian
13commitment and intellectual attainments were compatible; from
14the beginning, North Central College was nonsectarian in its
15hiring and admission practices; this pioneering concept, along
16with the commitment to inclusiveness and diversity that is the
17hallmark of the United Methodist Church, is the heritage of
18North Central College and continues to add depth and meaning to
19its programs; and
 
20    WHEREAS, North Central College has, for more than 7
21generations, educated students who have become leaders in
22science, the arts, education, business, and many other fields;

1North Central College is a community of learners dedicated to
2preparing informed, involved, principled, and productive
3citizens and leaders over a lifetime; and
 
4    WHEREAS, North Central College has had 9 presidents in its
5150-year history, beginning with A.A. Smith; notable alumni
6include: Egyptologist and professor James Henry Breasted,
7appliance company founder Frederick Lewis Maytag, barbed wire
8entrepreneur and Texaco founder John Warne Gates, Olympic Gold
9Medalist Dick Blick, President Ronald Reagan's personal
10physician Dr. Daniel Ruge, and National Institutes of Health
11Deputy Director for Intramural Research Dr. Joseph "Ed" Rall;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, North Central College will commemorate its
14sesquicentennial throughout the 2011-2012 academic year and
15celebrate its actual 150th anniversary on November 11, 2011;
16therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we recognize the 150th anniversary of North Central College,
20and wish all the students, alumni, faculty, and staff the very
21best in this historic year; and be it further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
