SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-696 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides for the issuance of In God We Trust license plates, for an additional charge of $20 at initial issuance and at renewal. Provides that $15 of the original issuance fee and $2 of the renewal fee shall be deposited into the Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund. Provides that $5 of the original issuance fee and $18 of the renewal fee shall be deposited into the Veterans Assistance Fund.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5Section 3-696 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-696 new)
7    Sec. 3-696. In God We Trust license plates.
8    (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of all applicable fees and
9applications made in the form prescribed by the Secretary, may
10issue special registration plates designated as In God We Trust
11license plates. The special plates issued under this Section
12shall be affixed only to passenger vehicles of the first
13division or motor vehicles of the second division weighing not
14more than 8,000 pounds. Plates issued under this Section shall
15expire according to the multi-year procedure established by
16Section 3-414.1 of this Code.
17    (b) The design and color of the special plates shall be
18wholly within the discretion of the Secretary. The Secretary
19may, in his or her discretion, allow the plates to be issued as
20vanity or personalized plates in accordance with Section
213-405.1 of this Code. The plates are not required to designate
22"Land of Lincoln", as prescribed in subsection (b) of Section
233-412 of this Code. The Secretary, in his or her discretion,

1shall approve and prescribe stickers or decals as provided
2under Section 3-412.
3    (c) An applicant for the special plate shall be charged a
4$20 fee for original issuance in addition to the appropriate
5registration fee. Of this fee, $5 shall be deposited into the
6Veterans Assistance Fund and $15 shall be deposited into the
7Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund, to be used by
8the Secretary to help defray the administrative processing
9costs.
10    For each registration renewal period, a $20 fee, in
11addition to the appropriate registration fee, shall be charged.
12Of this fee, $18 shall be deposited into the Veterans
13Assistance Fund and $2 shall be deposited into the Secretary of
14State Special License Plate Fund.
