50 ILCS 705/8.2

    Amends the Illinois Police Training Act. Provides that the maximum amount of hours a part-time police officer employed by one or more units of local government may work is 1,560 hours per unit per year.

1    AN ACT concerning local government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Police Training Act is amended by
5changing Section 8.2 as follows:
 
6    (50 ILCS 705/8.2)
7    Sec. 8.2. Part-time police officers.
8    (a) A person hired to serve as a part-time police officer
9must obtain from the Board a certificate (i) attesting to his
10or her successful completion of the part-time police training
11course; (ii) attesting to his or her satisfactory completion of
12a training program of similar content and number of hours that
13has been found acceptable by the Board under the provisions of
14this Act; or (iii) attesting to the Board's determination that
15the part-time police training course is unnecessary because of
16the person's extensive prior law enforcement experience. A
17person hired on or after the effective date of this amendatory
18Act of the 92nd General Assembly must obtain this certificate
19within 18 months after the initial date of hire as a
20probationary part-time police officer in the State of Illinois.
21The probationary part-time police officer must be enrolled and
22accepted into a Board-approved course within 6 months after
23active employment by any department in the State. A person

1hired on or after January 1, 1996 and before the effective date
2of this amendatory Act of the 92nd General Assembly must obtain
3this certificate within 18 months after the date of hire. A
4person hired before January 1, 1996 must obtain this
5certificate within 24 months after the effective date of this
6amendatory Act of 1995.
7    The employing agency may seek a waiver from the Board
8extending the period for compliance. A waiver shall be issued
9only for good and justifiable reasons, and the probationary
10part-time police officer may not practice as a part-time police
11officer during the waiver period. If training is required and
12not completed within the applicable time period, as extended by
13any waiver that may be granted, then the officer must forfeit
14his or her position.
15    (b) (Blank).
16    (c) The part-time police training course referred to in
17this Section shall be of similar content and the same number of
18hours as the courses for full-time officers and shall be
19provided by Mobile Team In-Service Training Units under the
20Intergovernmental Law Enforcement Officer's In-Service
21Training Act or by another approved program or facility in a
22manner prescribed by the Board.
23    (d) A part-time police officer means a law enforcement
24officer who is a member of a duly authorized police department
25and who is employed by one or more units of local government
261,560 hours or less, per unit, per 12-month period beginning on

1the first of January of any calendar year. For the purposes of
2this Section, the Board shall adopt rules defining what
3constitutes employment on a part-time basis.
