SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Samuel Wilson Hurley Jr. of Chicago, who
4passed away on December 22, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was born on May 26, 1935 in Chicago, the son of
6Louise Capshaw and Samuel Wilson Hurley, Sr.; he was raised in
7a Christian Science upbringing that set his foundation for
8life; he attended John Marshall High School in Chicago and was
9a member of the National Honor Society, which led to his
10induction into the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Chicago; in
111956, he married Bonnie Jean Sims; and
 
12    WHEREAS, He served in the ROTC and transitioned into the
13United States Air Force, where he served as a First Lieutenant;
14he served and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan; he later
15attended the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) where he
16received a Civil Engineering degree and was inducted into the
17Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; he became a lifetime member in
181981, and celebrated 50 years of membership in 2005; and
 
19    WHEREAS, He obtained a Master's degree in Public Works from
20the University of Pittsburgh; he was later appointed Deputy
21Commissioner of Public Works, Interim Commissioner of the
22Chicago Department of Sewers, and the Commissioner of Water for

1the City of Chicago; he later worked with Globetrotters
2Engineering in the Chicago O'Hare International Airport
3Development program, which included the installation of the
4"People Mover" and the opening of the Delta Flight Center; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was a member of the National Society of
6Professional Engineers, the National Society of Black
7Engineers, the Institute for Municipal Engineering, the
8American Public Works Association, the Institute for
9Administrative Management of American Public Works
10Association, the Chicago Assembly, the DIVITS Golf Club, and
11Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated; and
 
12    WHEREAS, He and his wife moved to Spring, Texas in 2005; he
13continued to serve in ministerial positions, including serving
14as "Security" for the Children's Ministry at Northside
15Christian Church; and
 
16    WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents and his
17sister, Doris Burnley; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Samuel Wilson Hurley Jr. is survived by his wife,
19Bonnie; his children, Pamela Holmes (Jesse), Michael
20(Christye), Steven, Sr. (Tonia), Angela McElroy (Roderick
21Sr.), and Kimberly Sneed (Kyle); his grandchildren, Jasmine,
22Christofer, Dallas (Sade), Nicholas, Steven, Jr., Eryn,

1Brittney, Jordan, Kennedy, Dylan, Kerrington, Roderick, Jr.,
2Kayla, Kylie, and Kole; his great-grandchildren, Jade, Jaylen,
3Trenton, and Aiden; and many other relatives and friends;
4therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
7his family and friends, the passing of Samuel Wilson Hurley
8Jr.; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Samuel Wilson Hurley Jr. as a symbol
11of our sincere sympathy.
