SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Roman Miller of Waukegan, who passed away
4on August 6, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Roman Miller was born in 1917 to Nicholas and
6Margaret (Westrup) Miller in Eden Valley, Minnesota, and spent
7his formative years in Millerville, Minnesota; in 1942, he
8married Cresy Wilken; from 1942 to 1946, he served as a
9Communications Specialist with the United States Army Air Force
10Headquarters, including two years in New Guinea and the
11Philippines; after teaching in Minnesota for several years,
12Roman moved with his family in 1955 to Waukegan to accept a
13position as a Business Education teacher at Waukegan Township
14High School; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Roman Miller spent his first 12 years as an
16educator working as a classroom teacher, guidance counselor,
17the Director of Guidance for Waukegan East High School, and the
18Director of Data Processing and spent his last 14 years, prior
19to retirement in 1981, serving as an Associate Superintendent
20for Business Affairs for the Waukegan Unit School District; and
 
21    WHEREAS, He received an undergraduate degree in Business
22Education from St. Cloud (Minnesota) State University and

1received advanced degrees from the University of Minnesota and
2Northwestern University; he was active in civic and community
3affairs at both the local and State level; he served as
4President of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, as a
5Trustee of the Illinois Teachers Retirement System, as
6Secretary of the Waukegan Civil Service Commission, as a Board
7member of Junior Achievement, as a Charter member and President
8of Waukegan Crime Stoppers, as Chairman of a United Way
9Allocations Committee, as President of the Waukegan Library
10Foundation, as Coordinator and Instructor in the Lake County
11AARP Tax-Aide Program, as Treasurer of the Lake County Retired
12Teachers Association, and as a member of the Waukegan Public
13School Board; and
 
14    WHEREAS, He was Secretary-Treasurer of the Waukegan
15Township Senior Citizens Service Committee and was
16instrumental in the construction of Park Place; he served over
1730 years as a Credit Union Director and was involved in
18Consumers Credit Union; he received many awards, including a
19National AARP award for community service; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Roman Miller was preceded in death by his beloved
21wife of 64 years, Cresy, with whom he created a marriage built
22on love and respect; by his parents; his brothers, John and
23Philip; and his sister, Florence; and

1    WHEREAS, Roman Miller is survived by his daughter, Penny
2Miller and her partner, Richard Hershman; his sons, Michael
3Miller and his wife, Patricia Berry, and Jonathan Miller and
4his wife, Julie Rand; his grandchildren, Stacy Mahoney and her
5husband, Tim Mahoney, Nicole Miller and her husband, Ed
6Stevenson, Katharine (Kevin) Mershon, Matthew Pflaum, Kevin
7Pflaum, and Brian Pflaum; his great-grandchildren, Lily,
8Susie, and Margee Mahoney, Brendon, Alex, Nate, and Carly
9Stevenson, and many nieces and nephews; he is also survived by
10his sisters, Mary Roers, Elaine Adamek, and Dorine Lehn; his
11brother, Joseph; his sisters-in-law, Kathleen Miller and
12Maxine Wilken, and by his brother-in-law and college roommate,
13Claude (Delores) Wilken; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
16his family and friends, the passing of Roman Miller; and be it
17further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Roman Miller as a symbol of our
20sincere sympathy.
