SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Robert Lawrence Yancey of Godfrey, who
4 passed away on March 16, 2010; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born on March 3, 1925, in Alton, to Walter
6 Scott and Mabel (Dougherty) Yancey; his parents died when he
7 was young, and he was raised by Charlie and Alpha Yancey; he
8 married Earlene Waggoner on June 25, 1949, in Brighton; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Mr. Yancey was a graduate of Brighton High School
10 and Shurtleff College, where he received a degree in business
11 administration; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He was unable to enlist in the military during
13 World War II due to deafness in one ear, so he served as a
14 battlefield medic with the 19th Indian Division of the British
15 Fourteenth Army through the auspices of the American Field
16 Service; he participated in engagements in India and Burma in
17 1943 and 1944 and was wounded at the Battle of Kohima in June
18 of 1944; and
 
19     WHEREAS, After his return from the war, he worked at Warner
20 Funeral Home and the Illinois Glass Company until he was
21 drafted into the United States Navy; after his honorable

1 discharge, he worked for Sinclair Oil Company, Piasa Motor
2 Fuels, and the Southern Illinois University Dental School,
3 where he retired in 1993; and
 
4     WHEREAS, He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church
5 of Brighton; he was a Freemason for almost 60 years; he was a
6 volunteer at Alton Memorial Hospital and a devoted family man;
7 he loved to travel and he loved dogs; he will be remembered for
8 his sense of humor, his thoughtfulness, and his generosity; and
 
9     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his wife, Earlene; his
10 parents; his brother, Joe; and his sisters, Dorothy, Maude, and
11 Louise; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Robert Yancey is survived by his brother, Bill;
13 his son, Charles (Vicki); his daughter, Elizabeth (Doug); his
14 son, Jonathan; and his grandchildren, Robert L. Yancey, Joseph
15 Yancey, Stephanie Leavell, and Clayton Leavell; therefore, be
16 it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
18 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
19 his family and friends, the passing of Robert Yancey; and be it
20 further
 
21     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
