SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of James Smith of Mount Prospect, who passed
4 away on March 26, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born September 29, 1936; he was well-known
6 in Mount Prospect, having received the Shining Star Award for
7 organizing the Pine-Wille Streets Marching Kazoo Irregulars,
8 where he was referred to as the Grand Kazoo; the band was a
9 kazoo-playing group of neighbors and friends, and a popular
10 entry in the Village 4th of July parade for over three decades;
11 and
 
12     WHEREAS, He was gentle, thoughtful, and spiritual; he was
13 active in the St. Raymond ministry, having served on the parish
14 council and on many teams for Christ Renews His Parish; he
15 placed great value on his numerous friendships, some dating
16 back to his early childhood in Skokie, where he attended St.
17 Peter School and St. George High School; and
 
18     WHEREAS, After attending Loras College, he enlisted in the
19 United States Navy, and was assigned to the U.S.S. Kearsarge
20 aircraft carrier; he was full of jokes and ideas on how to have
21 fun; his flashlight walks were legendary; his popcorn-making
22 talent was unmatched; and his great joy in sharing time with

1 his grandchildren was unparalleled; and
 
2     WHEREAS, James Smith was the devoted husband of Pat (nee
3 Holm), always on her team, supporting the many volunteer
4 activities outside their home; they were married November 19,
5 1960; he was the beloved father of Drew (Lisa), Scot (Mary),
6 Paul (Denise), and Mark (Jennifer); he was the cherished
7 grandfather of Ian, Audie, Moira, Alec, Paige, Caroline,
8 Lochlan, Seamus, Mirin, and Keegan; he was the loving son of
9 the late Leo and late Jean Smith; the fond brother of the late
10 Betty McDermott (Jack); and the dear brother-in-law of Nancy
11 Kost (Peter); he leaves his niece, Christy Ausmus; his nephew,
12 Mike Kost; his cousins, friends, and numerous extended family
13 members upon whose life he had been a positive and caring
14 influence; therefore, be it
 
15     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
17 his family and friends, the passing of James Smith; and be it
18 further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to the family of James Smith as a symbol of our
21 sincere sympathy.
