SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Larry Hawkins of Chicago, who passed away
4 on January 30, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Larry Hawkins was born in Chicago on December 12,
6 1930; he attended Douglass Elementary School and was a 1948
7 graduate of Wendell Phillips High School, where he was a star
8 basketball player; he then received his associate's degree from
9 Wilson Junior College, his bachelor's degree at George Williams
10 College, and his master's degrees from George Williams College
11 and Roosevelt University; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Larry Hawkins served his country with pride and
13 distinction as a member of the U.S. Army; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Larry Hawkins played basketball with the Brown
15 Bombers, a spinoff of the Harlem Globetrotters, under the name
16 Hawk Washington; and
 
17     WHEREAS, In the late 1950s, Larry Hawkins took over as
18 coach of the basketball program at Carver High School, where he
19 coached the varsity basketball team to a second place finish in
20 the IHSA State Championship game in 1962 and led Carver to the
21 championship in 1963; he also coached girls' volleyball at Hyde

1 Park High School and taught square and round dancing in Chicago
2 and, during the summertime, in Europe; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Larry Hawkins served as director of the Office of
4 Special Programs-College Prep at the University of Chicago
5 since 1968; the program provides tutors and classes, sponsors
6 trips to college campuses, and helps young people increase
7 their opportunities to continue their education beyond high
8 school; and
 
9     WHEREAS, In the early 1970s, Larry Hawkins founded the
10 Institute for Athletics and Education to work with student
11 athletes; he also served as president of Big Buddies Youth
12 Services, which dealt with troubled youths; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Larry Hawkins was named Coach of the Year by the
14 city's Prep Sports Writers Association in 1962 and 1963 in
15 recognition of his work; therefore, be it
 
16     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
17 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
18 his family and friends, the passing of Larry Hawkins; and be it
19 further
 
20     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to the family of Larry Hawkins as an expression of
