HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the students,
4 staff, faculty, and alumni of Oakton Community College on the
5 occasion of the College's 40th anniversary; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Founded in 1969, Oakton Community College
7 consisted of four factory buildings still being renovated in
8 Morton Grove; today Oakton offers learning opportunities at
9 four campuses in Des Plaines, Skokie, the neighborhood
10 (270-plus sites), and on the Internet; and
 
11     WHEREAS, In 1969 tuition was $10 per credit hour (now, $86
12 per credit hour); enrollment was 832 students (now, 46,000
13 students are enrolled); the budget for the college was $2
14 million (now, $95 million) 38 courses were offered (now, 4,549
15 courses are offered); 5 programs of study were offered in 1969
16 (now, 36 career programs and 80 certificates are offered);
17 there were 8 student clubs (now, there are 35); and in 1969
18 there were 63 faculty and staff members (now, there are 717
19 faculty and staff members); and
 
20     WHEREAS, The New York Times recently named Oakton Community
21 College one of the nation's top ten community colleges; in
22 October of 2007, Oakton earned reaccreditation from the Higher

1 Learning Commission for another ten years; and the college has
2 received more than $1 million in grants from the National
3 Science Foundation to encourage students to pursue careers in
4 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Oakton Community College belongs to the Illinois
6 Consortium for International Studies and Programs (ICISP);
7 through ICISP, Oakton is able to offer students the opportunity
8 to study abroad in countries including Austria, Australia,
9 China, Great Britain, Ireland, and Spain; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Oakton Community College is a "green" college,
11 respecting, improving, and conserving the environment through
12 academic offerings, learning opportunities, and ecologically
13 sound practices; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 congratulate everyone involved in the 40th anniversary of
17 Oakton Community College and wish them all the best in this
18 anniversary year; and be it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to a representative of Oakton Community College as a
21 symbol of our respect.
