HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Melvin D.
4 Patton of Columbia, who passed away on August 17, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Melvin Patton was born May 2, 1942, in Belleville;
6 and
 
7     WHEREAS, He starred in two sports, basketball and baseball,
8 at Belleville Township High School, played one year at Southern
9 Illinois University at Carbondale, then signed with the St.
10 Louis Cardinals in 1962; while playing in the Mon-Clair league,
11 he was a two time batting champion (.489 in 1969 and .359 in
12 1971), and led championship teams at Valmeyer, and became a
13 charter member of the Mon-Clair Hall of Fame; and
 
14     WHEREAS, He obtained a Bachelor's degree in business
15 administration at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale,
16 and a law degree from St. Louis University; and
 
17     WHEREAS, He was a teacher at Wirth Junior High in Cahokia,
18 and at Collinsville High School, which led to a position as
19 director of business services at Florissant Valley Community
20 College; from 1985 to 1998, he was vice president of Business
21 and Finance at Fontbonne College in St. Louis, and then became

1 director of the Sunset Hills (Missouri) Campus of Vatterott
2 College; and
 
3     WHEREAS, He served as the public address announcer during
4 the annual Valmeyer 4th of July Classic; and he was also a
5 member of the Greater St. Louis amateur Baseball Hall of Fame;
6 and
 
7     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and
8 Jonelia, nee Becherer, Patton; and
 
9     WHEREAS, He is survived by his wife, Candace I., nee
10 Wilson, Patton; his daughter, Kim (Tedd) Bacott; his sons,
11 Deron Patton and J.D. (Tara) Patton; his grandchildren, Ryan,
12 Caitlin, Ashley, J.T., Emma, Brittni, Kaitlyn, Kadence, Beau,
13 and Berlyn; and his brother, Larry; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Melvin
17 Patton; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Melvin D. Patton as a symbol of our
20 sincere sympathy.
