HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Elonzo W.
4 "Lonnie" Hill of Country Club Hills, who passed away on
5 February 18, 2009; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Elonzo Hill grew up in Bronzeville and graduated
7 from Tilden High School; his father was a plumber and Mr. Hill
8 worked by his side from a young age, climbing into boilers to
9 scrub them out; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Elonzo Hill began driving buses in 1961, staying
11 behind the wheel for eight years; he then worked his way up
12 through supervisory positions; during his tenure as training
13 center superintendent, the CTA set record-low crash rates; and
 
14     WHEREAS, From 1986 to 1998, Elonzo Hill served on the CTA's
15 Retirement Allowance Committee, serving six years as chairman
16 and overseeing $2 billion in pension funds; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Elonzo Hill served as executive vice president of
18 service delivery from 1991 to 1997, when he retired; as
19 executive vice president, he played key roles in the
20 reconstruction of the Green Line and the opening of the Orange
21 Line to Midway Airport; and

1     WHEREAS, Elonzo Hill was named to the Metra board in 2003
2 by suburban Cook County Board members and was reappointed last
3 year by Cook County Board President Todd Stroger; he was
4 elected vice chairman of Metra in 2006 and 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Elonzo Hill was on several committees with the
6 American Public Transportation Association and, in the late
7 1980s, chaired the International Bus Roadeo committee; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Elonzo Hill also is survived by his third wife,
9 Barbara; his daughters, Constance, Pamela Lee, Joanne Hayden,
10 Patricia Jackson, Maria Hill, and Helena Hill; his stepsons,
11 Carl and Michael Hampton; his brother, Edwin; his sisters,
12 Lavonne Campbell and Cynthia Hill; and his eight grandchildren
13 and one great-grandchild; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Elonzo
17 W. "Lonnie" Hill; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Elonzo Hill as an expression of our
20 sympathy.
