HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Daniel E.
4 Thornburgh on the occasion of his retirement as Professor
5 Emeritus of Journalism at Eastern Illinois University; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Daniel Thornburgh earned his bachelor's degree in
7 language arts from Indiana State University in Terre Haute,
8 Indiana in 1952; he earned his master's degree in journalism
9 from the University of Iowa in 1957 and his doctoral degree in
10 higher education and journalism from Indiana University in
11 Bloomington, Indiana in 1980; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Daniel Thornburgh has had a long and distinguished
13 career in education; he began his career as Director of Public
14 Relations for Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, serving there
15 from 1955 to 1957; from 1957 to 1959, he served as Director of
16 Information Services for Marshall University in Huntington,
17 West Virginia; from 1965 to 1979, he served as Director of
18 Journalism Studies at Eastern Illinois University; he served as
19 Chairman of EIU's Journalism Department from 1979 to 1984 and
20 as Professor of EIU's Journalism Department from 1984 to 1993;
21 from 1982 to 1983, he served as a visiting professor of
22 journalism at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, where he
23 taught public relations, news writing, and press & society

1 courses; from 1984 to 1988, he served as Director of University
2 Relations at Eastern Illinois University; from 1988 to 1993, he
3 served as Special Assistant to the President and Director of
4 University Relations at Eastern Illinois University; from 1993
5 to 1994, he was a visiting professor at the University of
6 Florida; following his service at the University of Florida, he
7 served as Professor Emeritus of Journalism at Eastern Illinois
8 University until his retirement; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Daniel Thornburgh has also worked extensively as a
10 professional journalist; he was a part-time reporter and news
11 writer for Radio Station WTHI in Terre Haute, Indiana from 1950
12 to 1952; from 1951 to 1952, he served as a reporter for the
13 Star in Terre Haute, Indiana; from 1957 to 1959, he served as a
14 special reporter for the Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, West
15 Virginia; from 1966 to 1969, he served as part-time night
16 editor of the Times Courier in Charleston; from 1967 to 1969,
17 he served as publisher and editor with the Banner-Times in
18 Casey; he has also served as a journalism consultant for Neoga
19 News, Illinois Opinion Writers, Coles-County Times Courier,
20 Effingham Daily News, Fairbury Blade, West Publishing Co., and
21 The Macmillan Co. and has served as a public relations
22 consultant for the American Dental Association, the Illinois
23 Dental Society, and the Illinois Press Association; and
 
24     WHEREAS, Daniel Thornburgh is a member of numerous civic

1 and professional organizations, including the Council for
2 Support and Advancement of Education (CASE), the Public
3 Relations Society of America's Central Illinois Chapter
4 (PRSA), the Society of Professional Journalists' Central
5 Illinois Chapter (SPJ), the Association for Education in
6 Journalism-Mass Communication (AEJMC), the Public Relations
7 Student Society of America, the Illinois Recreation Council,
8 the Charleston Rotary Club, Rotary International, the
9 Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, the Charleston City
10 Council, and the Charleston Recreation Board; in 1971, he was
11 named Citizen of the Year by the City of Charleston; therefore,
12 be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
15 congratulate Dr. Daniel E. Thornburgh on the occasion of his
16 retirement and wish him many happy and healthy retirement
17 years; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to Daniel Thornburgh as a symbol of our esteem and
20 respect.
