HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Jim Horvath,
4 Western Springs 2008 Man of the Year; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Jim served on the Police Pension Board from
6 2002-2006 and as its president in 2006; in 2005, he joined the
7 Western Springs Community Center Association (WSCCA) Board and
8 became its treasurer in 2007; he is Village caucus precinct
9 co-chair for Precinct 2; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Both he and his wife of 39 years, Rose, are
11 members of St. John of the Cross; they are both lectors and are
12 active volunteers for church events and with the BEDS program
13 in Brookfield; Jim has a leadership role in SAM, a men's group
14 that meets to share values and beliefs; Jim was among the
15 volunteers from St. John of the Cross and St. Francis parishes
16 who remodeled three homes for families displaced by Hurricane
17 Katrina; and he was also treasurer of New Hope Connection, a
18 non-profit refugee resettlement committee, composed of members
19 from First United Methodist Church of La Grange, both First
20 Congregational Churches of Western Springs and La Grange, and
21 St. John of the Cross Church; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Since his retirement in 2000, Jim has been a

1 volunteer income tax preparer for seniors through the Tax-Aide
2 program, a joint venture between AARP and the IRS; this project
3 involves visiting housebound seniors to prepare their tax
4 returns; and
 
5     WHEREAS, After his graduation from Loyola, with an
6 accounting degree and serving two years in the United States
7 Army, Jim married Rose, passed his CPA exam, and moved to New
8 Jersey for his job with AT&T; after the AT&T divesture 25 years
9 ago, he and Rose returned to the Chicago area with their two
10 young daughters, Janel and Leah, and bought a home in Western
11 Springs; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He earned a master's degree in taxation from
13 DePaul University and continued working for Ameritech in the
14 area of tax compliance; he is a past president of the Chicago
15 Tax Club, a Chicago area organization providing educational and
16 networking opportunities for its 450 members who work in
17 taxation in both the public and private sectors; since his
18 early retirement, he has started his own part-time accounting
19 practice, JJH Accounting, Inc.; therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
22 congratulate Jim Horvath and wish him the best in his future
23 endeavors; and be it further
