HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Bullying is physical, verbal, sexual, or
3 emotional harm or intimidation directed at a person or group of
4 people; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Bullying occurs in neighborhoods, playgrounds,
6 schools, and through technology, such as the Internet; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Various researchers have concluded that bullying
8 is the most common form of violence, affecting millions of
9 American children and adolescents annually; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Thousands of Illinois children and adolescents
11 are targets of bullying annually; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Targets of bullying are more likely to acquire
13 physical, emotional, and learning problems and students who are
14 repeatedly bullied often fear such activities as riding the
15 bus, going to school, and attending community activities; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Children who bully are at greater risk of engaging
17 in more serious violent behaviors; and
 
18     WHEREAS, A large percentage of children who are bullied
19 believe that adult help is infrequent and ineffective;

1 therefore, be it
 
2     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
4 designate the week of October 5-11, 2008 as Illinois Bullying
5 Prevention Awareness Week in the State of Illinois; and be it
6 further
 
7     RESOLVED, That we encourage Illinois schools, parents,
8 recreation programs, religious institutions, and community
9 organizations to engage in a variety of awareness and
10 prevention activities designed to make our communities safer
11 for all children and adolescents.
