HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize important events in
4 the State of Illinois; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The Coles County 4-H Auction has been helping
6 young 4-H men and women raise money for fifty years; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The first auction was held on July 27, 1957,
8 selling 24 steers of the 4-H members; Louis Christen and John
9 Conerty, both of the Cooperative Extension Service, Mel
10 Lockard, a local banker, and local auctioneers were responsible
11 for organizing the first auction; Mr. Lockard donated a
12 purebred heifer to benefit the 4-H Clubs; and
 
13     WHEREAS, In 1962 the auction began selling hogs and sheep;
14 by 1980 six different livestock varieties were being sold at
15 the auction, including beef, swine, sheep, poultry, rabbits,
16 and goats; in 1990 watermelons were added to the many different
17 items people could bid on to help the 4-H Clubs; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Each year the volunteer auctioneers, workers, the
19 staff of the University of Illinois Extension office, and
20 others make the auction a success; and

1     WHEREAS, People have continually bid top dollar for
2 livestock and produce, helping 4-H members to continue learning
3 and growing in Coles County; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6 commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Coles County 4-H
7 Auction and congratulate the men and women involved in this
8 great venture; and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to a representative of the Coles County 4-H Clubs as
11 a symbol of our respect.
