2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Lincoln School in | ||||||
4 | Spring Valley on the occasion of its 70th anniversary on June | ||||||
5 | 1, 2007; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Lincoln School opened its doors for the first time | ||||||
7 | in 1937; the first principal was Matilda Harmon, the school | ||||||
8 | secretary was Frank Sharkey, the superintendent was James | ||||||
9 | Nesti, and the school board president was Charles VanSchaicik; | ||||||
10 | and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Lincoln School has experienced several changes | ||||||
12 | over the last 70 years; the original school consisted of eight | ||||||
13 | classrooms, two offices, and a lunchroom; the remainder of the | ||||||
14 | present day Lincoln School was added in 1956; a combination gym | ||||||
15 | and cafeteria were added and the old cafeteria became the | ||||||
16 | present stage; there were also three classrooms, an office for | ||||||
17 | the secretary and principal, and two locker rooms added at this | ||||||
18 | time; what was the original building now houses eight | ||||||
19 | classrooms; the lunch room has become the stage and the | ||||||
20 | principal and secretary's offices are now special services | ||||||
21 | rooms; the 1956 addition now houses a combination gym and | ||||||
22 | lunchroom, three classrooms, a physical education office, and | ||||||
23 | the principal and secretary's office; the locker rooms of the |

1 | addition have been transformed into a teacher's lounge, | ||||||
2 | library, and computer lab; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, There have been many other changes over the past | ||||||
4 | seventy years; the graduation class of 1938 had 29 students; | ||||||
5 | everyone walked to school as there were no buses; there were no | ||||||
6 | snow days and school was in session regardless of the weather; | ||||||
7 | there was not a hot lunch program, so everyone brought a lunch | ||||||
8 | and ate in the lunchroom or walked home to eat; there were no | ||||||
9 | kindergarten or preschool classes; the original building | ||||||
10 | housed grades one through eight, with one class per grade; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, The current school has an enrollment of 220 | ||||||
12 | students; it serves an average of 120 student hot lunches and | ||||||
13 | an average of 40 breakfasts everyday; the current building | ||||||
14 | houses grades Pre-K through first; there are four sections of | ||||||
15 | preschool and kindergarten and three sections of first grade; | ||||||
16 | and

17 | WHEREAS, The current principal is Kimberly Lisanby-Barber, | ||||||
18 | the school secretary is Bobbi VanSchaick, the superintendent is | ||||||
19 | Daniel Marenda, and the school board president is Ray Nolasco; | ||||||
20 | Red Nestler, an original student of Lincoln School, is still at | ||||||
21 | Lincoln School as a janitor; therefore, be it

22 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

1 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
2 | congratulate Lincoln School for celebrating its 70th | ||||||
3 | anniversary; and be it further

4 | RESOLVED, That the day of June 1, 2007 be declared Lincoln | ||||||
5 | School's 70th Birthday Celebration Day in the State of | ||||||
6 | Illinois; and be it further | ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to Lincoln School principal Kimberly Lisanby-Barber | ||||||
9 | as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
