HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the faculty,
4 staff, students, and alumni of Benedictine University in Lisle
5 on the 120th anniversary of the institution; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Benedictine University was founded in Chicago as
7 St. Procopius College by the Benedictine Procopius Abbey on
8 March 2, 1887; Father Nepomucene Jaegar was the founder of the
9 college; other teachers during that time are also considered as
10 founders, but only Father Jaegar had the legal authority to
11 establish the school; Father Procopius Neuzil and two other
12 Benedictine monks were the first teachers at the college; and
 
13     WHEREAS, It secured a charter from the State of Illinois in
14 1890 and in 1900 a cornerstone was laid for a building to be
15 erected in a cornfield in Lisle and Benedictine was dedicated
16 in September 1901; in 1914 the abbey was formally moved to that
17 location from Chicago; after additions were added to the
18 building, it housed St. Procopius Abbey, College and Academy,
19 and Seminary; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Father Daniel Kucera in
21 the 1950s, Illinois Benedictine College (now, Benedictine
22 University), received accreditation apart from the academy;

2     WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Father Kucera, separate
3 Boards of Trustees were established for the college and
4 academy; and
 
5     WHEREAS, From its origins as a school for Czech students
6 with Czech as the lecture language, to becoming the school it
7 is today, Benedictine University has positively impacted many
8 people in 120 years, and we look forward to more
9 accomplishments from this fine institution; therefore, be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12 congratulate the administration, faculty, staff, students, and
13 alumni of Benedictine University on this occasion and wish all
14 involved with Benedictine University continued success in the
15 future; and be it further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to William J. Carroll, President of Benedictine
18 University, as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
