HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, On behalf of the citizens of Illinois, the members
3 of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to join
4 the American Stroke Association, a division of the American
5 Heart Association, in celebrating May 2007 as American Stroke
6 Month in the State of Illinois; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Stroke Survivors Empowering Each Other (SSEEO), a
8 first-of-its-kind-in-the-nation group of stroke survivors from
9 all parts of Illinois is meeting in Springfield May 15-16,
10 2007; and
 
11     WHEREAS, The themes for American Stroke Month 2007 are
12 "Young People and Stroke" to educate the public and
13 policymakers about the devastating effects of stroke in young
14 people under age 30, and "Igniting the Power" to end stroke in
15 African Americans, who are at particularly high risk of the
16 disease, by empowering them to reduce their risk, recognize the
17 warning signs, and respond quickly; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the
19 United States, killing about 150,000 Americans each year; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term
21 disability with more than 1.1 million American adults

1 experiencing functional limitations or difficulty with
2 activities of daily living resulting from a stroke; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Americans are more aware of the risk factors and
4 warning signs for stroke than in the past, but still less than
5 one in five adults can correctly classify all stroke symptoms;
6 and
 
7     WHEREAS, Warning signs of stroke include sudden numbness or
8 weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the
9 body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding;
10 sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble
11 walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and sudden
12 severe headache with no known cause; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Stroke leads to the death of more than 7,500
14 citizens of Illinois each year and disables thousands more; and
 
15     WHEREAS, New and effective treatments have been developed
16 to treat and minimize the severity and damaging effects of
17 strokes, but much more research is needed; therefore, be it
 
18     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
20 proclaim May 2007 to be American Stroke Month in the State of
21 Illinois and urge all the citizens of our State to familiarize

1 themselves with the warning signs, symptoms, and risk factors
2 associated with stroke so that we might begin to reduce the
3 devastating effects of stroke on our population.
