HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize the Des Plaines Public
4 Library on the occasion of the Library's 100th anniversary; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The Des Plaines Public Library came into creation
6 in 1907 when a $5,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie and a $500 per
7 year stipend from the Des Plaines Village Board made its
8 construction possible; a protracted campaign to Andrew
9 Carnegie for funding, which lasted for two years, was started
10 by Dr. C.A. Earle, who convinced Carnegie of a library's
11 benefits to the community of Des Plaines; and
 
12     WHEREAS, The original library, dedicated on October 5,
13 1907, was located on the corner of Miner Street and Graceland
14 Avenue and contained 725 books and periodicals in both English
15 and German; in 1936 the library moved into the Des Plaines
16 State Bank building at the corner of Lee Street and Ellinwood
17 Street until the completion of the new Municipal Building in
18 1937; in June 1958 the library moved to a new building at
19 Thacker Street and Graceland Avenue until September 2000, when
20 its current location at 1501 Ellinwood Street was dedicated;
21 and
 
22     WHEREAS, Today the library has over 300,000 items available

1 and circulates more than one million items per year, with more
2 than half a million people visiting the library annually; its
3 location serves as an anchor for downtown development for the
4 city of Des Plaines; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7 congratulate the citizens of Des Plaines, Library Director
8 Sandra K. Norlin, and the employees of the Des Plaines Public
9 Library on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the
10 Library; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to Des Plaines Public Library Director Sandra K.
13 Norlin.
