HOUSE RESOLUTION

2     WHEREAS, Six different structures, located in Kaskaskia,
3 Vandalia, and Springfield, have served as the Illinois Capitol
4 since the State's founding in 1818; and

5     WHEREAS, Traditionally, the Capitol included space for the
6 executive, judicial, and legislative branches of State
7 government, and by custom and practice each General Assembly's
8 inaugural ceremonies took place in that structure; and

9     WHEREAS, Only twice in the history of the Illinois House of
10 Representatives has chamber construction or reconstruction
11 work necessitated that inaugural proceedings take place at an
12 alternative location; first, in 1840, when the construction of
13 the building now known as the Old State Capitol was not
14 completed, and again in 2007, as craftsmen diligently worked to
15 finish renovations that would restore the House chambers to the
16 grandeur and majesty of its first days in 1877; construction of
17 the present Capitol was finally completed in 1888; and

18     WHEREAS, A number of venues for hosting the Illinois House
19 of Representatives portion of the 95th General Assembly's
20 inaugural ceremonies were considered; the Sangamon Auditorium
21 at the University of Illinois at Springfield was judged to
22 provide the best alternative to the actual House chambers; and

1     WHEREAS, While the House of Representatives staff devoted
2 extensive time and energy towards ensuring that the 2007
3 ceremonies were conducted in a manner consistent with the
4 dignity and high standards of all previous House inaugurals, it
5 is recognized that the event would not have been possible
6 without the assistance and many hours of hard work provided by
7 University of Illinois at Springfield personnel and the
8 Sangamon Auditorium staff; Gerald Burkhart, Cheryl Peck, Joan
9 Sestak, and Ed Wojcicki were especially helpful in coordinating
10 the logistics of this important event; and

11     WHEREAS, The inaugural was judged by House members, their
12 families, and guests to be a complete success worthy of the
13 Body's traditions and history; therefore, be it

14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 extend our sincere appreciation for the unprecedented
17 hospitality extended by the University to our members,
18 families, guests, and other dignitaries on the occasion of the
19 January 10, 2007 inaugural ceremony; and be it further

20     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to
21 Chancellor Richard Ringeisen on behalf of the grateful members
22 of the Illinois House of Representatives.
