HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Regis Technologies, Inc., headquartered in Morton
3 Grove, Illinois, is celebrating 50 years of providing organic
4 synthesis and chromatography separation services for
5 government agencies, university research laboratories, and
6 worldwide pharmaceutical manufacturers of all sizes; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The roots of the company extend back to 1888 when
8 Louis Glunz I, a native of Westphalia, Germany, started his own
9 business, the Louis Glunz Company, merchandising wine, beer,
10 and spirits in Chicago; during the Prohibition era, the family
11 business survived by marketing sacramental wines, medicinal
12 brandy, and home brewing supplies; after Prohibition, the
13 company grew as beer and wine bottlers and distributors, and
14 are still thriving today; and
 
15     WHEREAS, While working with his father in the family
16 business, Louis J. Glunz III developed an interest in
17 chemistry, and they talked of starting a chemical company; he
18 attended Loyola University, where he earned a Bachelor of
19 Science degree, and the University of Notre Dame, where he
20 earned his Doctorate; he then spent two years with the U.S.
21 Army Chemical Corps, then returned to launch Regis Chemical
22 Company, which was later renamed Regis Technologies, Inc., in
23 1956 with partner, Dr. Anthony Verbiscar; at the suggestion of
24 Dr. Bernhard Witkop, a researcher at the National Institutes of
25 Health, the company began to synthesize indole compounds and
26 became known as the "indole company"; and
 
27     WHEREAS, Regis Technologies, Inc., has continued to grow
28 over the years and today is one of the State of Illinois'
29 premier companies; the company has made so many valuable
30 contributions through its work, including its work with the
31 U.S. Army Chemical Center, the production of anti-radiation
32 compounds for Walter Reed Army Medical Center, scaling up a

1 synthesis for a potential withdrawal compound for the National
2 Institute of Drug Abuse, and the commercialization of gas
3 chromatography products; the company is recognized as a pioneer
4 in innovative chromatography; and
 
5     WHEREAS, In 1999 Louis J. Glunz IV became president of
6 Regis Technologies, Inc., and Louis J. Glunz III became CEO and
7 Chairman, but in 2005 Louis J. Glunz III relinquished the CEO
8 title, enabling him to commit time and energy to several civic,
9 charitable, and educational organizations; he serves as the
10 Chair of Catholic Charities of Chicago; and
 
11     WHEREAS, As Regis Technologies, Inc., marks its 50th
12 anniversary, the company has added a new state-of-the-art
13 separation technology, Super Critical Fluid Chromatography,
14 and has completed construction on a new synthetic research
15 laboratory wing; this expansion was financed by bonds through
16 the Illinois Finance Authority; the Regis team is proud of its
17 reputation as "chemists for the life sciences"; therefore, be
18 it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
21 we congratulate the fine men and women of Regis Technologies,
22 Inc., on the 50th anniversary of this innovative chemical
23 company; we also congratulate the Glunz family, most notably
24 Louis J. Glunz III and Louis J. Glunz IV, for their hard work
25 and dedication to make this company a benefit to the State of
26 Illinois; and be it further
 
27     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
28 presented to the President and CEO of Regis Technologies, Inc.,
29 Louis J. Glunz IV, and his father, founder and Chairman, Louis
30 J. Glunz III.
