HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois recognize the Junior Reserve Officers'
4 Training Corps (JROTC) at Mattoon High School; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The JROTC program has been in existence since 1935
6 and the Corps of Cadets has earned great honor for the program,
7 the Mattoon High School, and the State of Illinois; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Students learn important lessons in teamwork,
9 discipline, and leadership through the JROTC program; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The main emphasis of "community support" sets the
11 tone for the activities during the year; a typical year for the
12 JROTC program consists of the drill and rifle teams competing
13 in 22 events to include national level competition;
14 participation in 21 parades, reviews, drill team
15 demonstrations, visits to significant points of interest, and
16 adventure training; an annual formal military ball; the color
17 guard conducting 36 events in support of Corps and community
18 activities; support for 24 school events; participation in 12
19 community support events, which include the VFW Poppy Day,
20 Cancer Society car wash, Shriner's paper drive, Mattoon
21 Clean-Up, Meals for the Needy, Lik-Nu Charity Sale, placing of
22 flags on veterans' graves for Veterans Day, and funeral
23 details; 14 cadets participating in JROTC summer camp; and
24 participation in at least one major community service project;
25 and
 
26     WHEREAS, The JROTC program is currently managed by LTC Ron
27 Yelk and CSM Terry Watts; therefore, be it
 
28     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
29 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
30 we commend the Mattoon High School JROTC program and recognize

1 and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young
2 men and women of our State, who are its future; and be it
3 further
 
4     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 presented to Mattoon High School's Junior Reserve Officers'
6 Training Corps program as an expression of our admiration and
7 esteem.
