SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
220 ILCS 5/8-209 new

    Amends the Public Utilities Act. Prohibits a public utility from attempting to collect a debt or authorizing a third party to attempt to collect a debt from a customer without first providing the customer with 30 days' written notice of its intent to collect the debt. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT concerning regulation.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Public Utilities Act is amended by adding
5 Section 8-209 as follows:
 
6     (220 ILCS 5/8-209 new)
7     Sec. 8-209. Collection of debt; notice required. No public
8 utility shall attempt to collect a debt or authorize any third
9 party to collect a debt from any customer without first
10 providing the customer with 30 days' prior written notice of
11 its intent to collect the debt. This Section shall be enforced
12 under the provisions of Article X of this Act.
 
13     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
14 becoming law.
