SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Sergeant Uday Singh, U.S.
4 Army, of Lake Forest, on Monday, December 1, 2003, in Iraq; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Sergeant Singh was raised in India and decided he
6 wanted to live in America when he was 16 and visiting his aunt
7 and uncle in Lake Forest; he decided to enlist in the U.S. Army
8 to achieve his goal of becoming an American citizen after he
9 learned the process was much shorter for veterans of the U.S.
10 military; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Sergeant Singh came from a military family; his
12 late grandfather, Kartar Singh was a decorated World War II
13 veteran, originally in the Royal British Air Force and later
14 the Indian Air Force; his father, Preet Mahinder Singh Taunque,
15 is retired from the Indian Army; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Sergeant Singh finished his schooling at St.
17 Stephen's School in India's Sector 45 in 2000; he completed his
18 military training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and then was
19 stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas; he was assigned to C Company,
20 1st Battalion, 34th Armored Regiment, 1st Infantry Division; in
21 early 2002, he was stationed in Kuwait for four months; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Prior to his deployment, Sergeant Singh had
23 started working toward a business degree by accumulating
24 college credits from courses he was able to take over the
25 Internet; and
 
26     WHEREAS, Sergeant Uday Singh is the first native of India
27 to be killed in Iraq; American citizenship was conferred upon
28 Sergeant Singh posthumously; and
 
29     WHEREAS, The passing of Sergeant Uday Singh has been deeply

1 felt by many, especially his father and mother, Preet Mahinder
2 Singh and Manjit Singh Taunque; his sister, Bani; his uncle,
3 Prem Jay Datt; and his aunt; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
5 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
6 Sergeant Uday Singh, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his
7 friends, family, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
8 further
 
9     RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Sergeant Uday Singh
10 and his willingness to serve our country, which led to him
11 making the ultimate sacrifice, his life; and be it further
 
12     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to the family of Sergeant Uday Singh as an expression
14 of our sincere condolences.
