 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members  of  the  Senate  of  the  State  of
 3    Illinois  learned  with  regret  of the death of Lucille Bell
 4    Pleasant of East St. Louis on October 8, 2003; and

 5        WHEREAS, Lucille Bell was born on May 24, 1929, to Murphy
 6    and Anna Mae Bell; her parents preceded her in death; and

 7        WHEREAS, Mrs. Pleasant made her decision to follow Christ
 8    at the age of 10 years and joined St. Paul Baptist Church  in
 9    East St. Louis; and

10        WHEREAS, Mrs. Pleasant received her education in East St.
11    Louis,  graduating  from  Lincoln  Senior High School in June
12    1947; she continued her formal education at Howard University
13    in Washington, D.C.; after two years, she  returned  to  East
14    St.  Louis  and  married  Lloyd Pleasant on July 22, 1951; he
15    preceded her in death; and

16        WHEREAS, Mrs. Pleasant was employed in various  positions
17    including  as  a  case  worker  at General Assistance and she
18    retired as a case worker  from  the  Illinois  Department  of
19    Public   Aid  (now  the  Department  of  Human  Services)  in
20    December, 1996; and

21        WHEREAS,  Mrs.  Pleasant  was  an  energetic  person  and
22    rightfully earned her title as  the  "family  overseer";  she
23    served  St.  Paul  Baptist  Church  well  as  a member of the
24    Trustee Board  and  the  following  organizations:  Women  of
25    Action,   Friday   Night  Bible  Study,  Board  of  Christian
26    Education, Usher Ministry Number Two, and the Angelic Voices;
27    she was also active in the  community  as  a  member  of  the
28    Violet Thimble Club, an affiliate of the National Association
29    of Club Women, Boys and Girls, Inc. and secretary of her high
30    school graduation class alumni; and

31        WHEREAS,  The  passing  of Lucille Bell Pleasant has been

 1    deeply felt by all who knew and  loved  her,  especially  her
 2    son,  Lamont L. Pleasant; her grandson, Lamont Pleasant, Jr.;
 3    her granddaughter, Tiera Pleasant;  Janet  Lowery,  whom  she
 4    mentored and helped to rear; her sisters, Bettie L. Smith and
 5    Shirley  Ann  Smith;  her special cousin, Ernestine E. Rives;
 6    her nieces, Michelle (Elwood) Buchanan and  Tracy  (Terrence)
 7    Hargrove;  her  nephews,  Michael  (Carmel)  Smith  and  Kyle
 8    (Samantha) Smith; her great-nieces, Jennifer, Tamiko, Keisha,
 9    Courtney   Smith,  Katrina  Smith  and  Epiphany  Smith;  her
10    great-nephew, Terrence Hargrove, Jr.; her great-great  niece,
11    Kierra;  her  many cousins; her many friends, associates, and
12    relatives,  and  her  family  at  St.  Paul  Baptist  Church;
13    therefore, be it

14        RESOLVED, BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-THIRD  GENERAL
15    ASSEMBLY  OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
16    all who knew her, the death of Lucille B.  Pleasant  of  East
17    St. Louis; and be it further

18        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
19    presented  to  the  family  of  Lucille  B.  Pleasant  as  an
20    expression of our sincerest condolences.
