 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the Senate  of  the  Ninety-Third
 3    Illinois  General Assembly are saddened to learn of the death
 4    of J. Michael Monahan, who died of natural  causes  on  March
 5    18, 2003 at the age of 16 in Evanston; and

 6        WHEREAS,  Michael  was the oldest son of Kathy and Joseph
 7    Monahan of Evanston, and  is  also  survived  by  a  brother,
 8    Colin,  a  freshman  at  St.  Ignatius  High  School, and two
 9    sisters, Leigh and Kate, both students at  Pope  John  XXIII;
10    and

11        WHEREAS,  Michael  was  a  member of St. Nicholas Parish,
12    where he was an active member, serving as  President  of  the
13    St. Nicholas Youth Group; and

14        WHEREAS, As a junior at St. Ignatius High School, Michael
15    was   a  well-rounded  student,  earning  membership  in  the
16    National Honor Society, First Honor Roll,  the  freshman  and
17    sophomore  basketball  teams,  the  rugby  team in his junior
18    year, and the Media Broadcasting student group; and

19        WHEREAS,  Michael  was  also  a  retreat  leader  at  St.
20    Ignatius and a member of the 2000 Students Against the  Death
21    Penalty; and

22        WHEREAS, Michael's interests in his community, school and
23    public  policy  served  him  well  as  he pursued his goal to
24    attend college at the University of Illinois, where both  his
25    parents  attended,  and follow in his father's footsteps as a
26    lawyer, and one day seek public office; and

27        WHEREAS, Michael's death is mourned by his family, fellow
28    church parishioners, school mates and all who knew him in his
29    neighborhood as a bright and engaging young  man;   therefore
30    be it

 1        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
 2    ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
 3    J. Michael Monahan at such an early age; and be it further

 4        RESOLVED, that  suitable  copies  of  this  preamble  and
 5    resolution  be  presented  to  the members of his family as a
 6    sincere expression of our sorrow for their loss.
