HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of this Body are honored to recognize
3 significant milestones in the lives of the people of this
4 State; and
 
5     WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Mildred Freid,
6 known affectionately as Grandma Lou, of Skokie recently
7 celebrated the 100th anniversary of her birth; and
 
8     WHEREAS, On her birthday, she renewed her drivers license,
9 and continues to drive just as she has done for the past 50
10 years; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Mrs. Freid was born in Chicago on June 26, 1904;
12 she grew up on the west and south sides of Chicago; her mother,
13 a widow, worked for $1 a day selling children's dresses, and
14 while life was difficult, they never went without food or a
15 place to live; she can recall working as a counting-machine
16 operator at the Boston Store for $12 a week from the time she
17 was 14 until she married, but then there wasn't money taken out
18 for taxes or Social Security; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Mrs. Freid remembers a time when cookies came in
20 cans and for $5 a week she could vacation with friends and
21 family at her boss's home in Wisconsin; and
 
22     WHEREAS, She married Sam Freid in 1926; after he died in
23 1957, Mildred got her drivers license for the first time; and
24 she raised their three sons; her North Side Albany Park home
25 was always open to her children's friends, who came over to
26 watch television and listen to the radio; and
 
27     WHEREAS, Mrs. Freid can recall having company over and as
28 they watched television, a news bulletin came on to inform them
29 about the bombing of Pearl Harbor; and

1     WHEREAS, Her homes have always been open to people who
2 needed a place to stay; several family members have lived under
3 her roof, and she used to rent out a room for $7 a week; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Mrs. Freid now shares a home with her son; she has
5 five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; she wakes up
6 every morning, makes the beds in the house, and does her
7 physical therapy exercises while observing the birds nesting
8 outside her kitchen window; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 congratulate Mrs. Mildred Freid on attaining a milestone in her
12 life with her 100th birthday, and we extend to Mrs. Freid our
13 sincere best wishes for the future; and be it
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to Mildred Freid as a token of our respect and
16 esteem.
