HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois are pleased to honor the Senn High School
4 Health Center on the occasion of its open house that occurred
5 on Monday, March 22, 2004; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The clinic was started by Louis A. Weiss Memorial
7 Hospital, who ran the clinic prior to Heartland Health Outreach
8 (HHO); the program became a part of HHO in the spring of 2002
9 when Weiss Hospital became a for-profit hospital; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The goal of Senn Health Center is to improve the
11 physical and emotional health of Senn students and teach them
12 life-long, positive health behaviors; the Center provides
13 primary health care services for approximately 1,800 Senn High
14 School students, including health assessment, physical exams,
15 diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury, health
16 education, prevention services, and laboratory services;
17 students benefit from the partnership with HHO by having access
18 to additional comprehensive primary medical care, including
19 radiology, pharmacy, diagnostic, and dental care offered at a
20 sliding scale fee; and
 
21     WHEREAS, The Center is located at 5900 N. Glenwood, in
22 Edgewater and operates out of a newly renovated space within
23 the school; the funding for the newly renovated space was
24 provided by the Chicago Board of Education; the space includes
25 three exam rooms, a handicap accessible bathroom, a laboratory,
26 storage room, and access to a large meeting room; and
 
27     WHEREAS, The program is collaborative in nature;
28 Alternatives, Inc., a youth services agency in Uptown, provides
29 mental health services 20 hours per week; other partners
30 include Senn High School, The Chicago Board of Education, Polk
31 Bros. (primary funder of the clinic), Grant Healthcare

1 (2002-2003 funder), and the Lurie Foundation (funded the
2 program in 2002); and
 
3     WHEREAS, Senn High School has a very diverse student
4 population; 44% of the students were born outside the United
5 States and hail from 60 different countries; 61% of the student
6 body speaks a language other than English in their homes; 24.4%
7 of the students have limited English language proficiency;
8 through HHO, Senn students have access to interpretive services
9 in 40 languages; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The Senn Health Center strives to improve the
11 physical, emotional, and mental health of Senn students by
12 promoting healthy lifestyles and providing accessible
13 preventative and curative health services; it works to reduce
14 absenteeism from school due to illness and to decrease the rate
15 of truancy and school drop outs due to emotional and mental
16 health challenges; therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19 honor the Senn Health Center for the invaluable health care
20 services it provides to the students of Senn High School; and
21 be it further
 
22     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
23 presented to Senn Health Center as an expression of our esteem.
