HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are disappointed to learn of the closure of
4the Springfield Regional Processing and Distribution Center of
5the United States Postal Service; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The U.S. Postal Service has been a staple of
7American society during the 248 years of the American
8experiment, allowing communication and the flow of information
9from town to town, city to city, and state to state for
10generations; and
 
11    WHEREAS, A year before the official founding of the United
12States of America, the Continental Congress recognized the
13need for a postal service by appointing Benjamin Franklin to
14the office of Postmaster General in 1775; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Although advancements in technology and business
16have made the U.S. Postal Service seemingly a relic of the
17past, its importance cannot be overstated nor its significance
18to national security, secure correspondence, and tradition;
19and
 
20    WHEREAS, A local post office connects a small rural town
21to a larger interconnected network of nationwide communities

1while offering many beneficial functions, such as arranging
2the delivery of a care package to a loved one stationed
3overseas, providing passport applications and renewal
4services, and making available the purchase of money orders;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Massive central hubs and smaller distribution
7centers may be acceptable for privately owned businesses;
8however, the U.S. Postal Service is not a privately owned
9business but is instead a government-owned corporation; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The U.S. Postal Service employs roughly 525,469
11individuals nationwide, with its staff including mail carriers
12who deliver mail to your mailbox, mechanics who perform
13routine vehicle repairs, and clerks behind the counter who
14remain committed to providing passport services, selling
15stamps, and weighing and correcting postage for packages to be
16shipped; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The closure of the Springfield Regional
18Processing and Distribution Center extends beyond its
19employees, who will potentially lose their jobs, to local
20residents whose vital mail deliveries will experience delays;
21and
 
22    WHEREAS, The Springfield Regional Processing and

1Distribution Center employs many, and these individuals
2alongside various local leaders and other U.S. Postal Service
3employees recently voiced their concerns regarding the loss of
4the Springfield Regional Processing and Distribution Center in
5a robust public gathering; and
 
6    WHEREAS, News regarding the closure of the Springfield
7Regional Processing and Distribution Center and additional
8processing and distribution centers across the country should
9not ring in indifferent ears but rather should concern each
10and every constituent in every district in every state;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we urge Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to reconsider closing
15the Springfield Regional Processing and Distribution Center;
16and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18delivered to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.
