SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Kirby M. Platter of Rock Island, who
4passed away on January 13, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Kirby Platter was born in Dallas, Texas to Henry
6Van Every and Grace (McDonough) Platter on May 24, 1932; in his
7youth, he lived in New Orleans, Louisiana, Pass Christian,
8Mississippi, and New York City, New York; at age five, he moved
9with his mother to Atlanta, Georgia; he attended Christ the
10King Grade School and Marist High School; he attended
11University of Georgia for one year; he served in the U.S. Army
12and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War; he earned a
13bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech
14in December 1957; Kirby Platter married Jo Ann Paterna in 1958;
15they had seven children; he later married Carol DeKezel in Rock
16Island on November 25, 1989; and
 
17    WHEREAS, From 1958 to 1965, Kirby Platter lived in Decatur,
18Alabama; while there, he held various Industrial Engineering
19positions, including working for NASA in Huntsville, Alabama,
20where he worked on tooling the Saturn 5 Booster as part of the
21Apollo moon program; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Kirby Platter moved his family to the Quad Cities

1in 1965; he held Manufacturing Engineering Management
2positions with JI Case for over 23 years; after Case, he held a
3number of contract positions in Industrial Engineering,
4Quality Assurance, Technical Writing, and Personnel Management
5with a number of firms in Illinois and Iowa; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Kirby Platter loved life and lived a full one; he
7enjoyed domestic and international travel; he was an ardent
8Georgia Tech and Hawkeye fan; he volunteered his time towards
9several organizations, including LIFE adult tutoring at
10Blackhawk College, the APRIS program of reading newspapers on
11air for the visually impaired through NPR's WVIK radio station,
12the Red Cross, and Trinity Hospital; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Kirby Platter was preceded in death by his
14parents; his wife, Carol DeKezel; his sister, Mimi (Joseph)
15Cook; and his brother, Van (Mimi) Platter; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Kirby Platter is survived by his children, John
17(Justine) Platter, Peter (Cheryl) Platter, Susan (Troy)
18Hudson, Molly Bussert, Margaret Platter, Brigid (Harry) Dodge,
19and Ann (Matthew) Patterson; his stepchildren, Karen DeKezel,
20Thomas (Charlene) DeKezel, and Timothy (Lona) DeKezel; his
21eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews;
22therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Kirby M. Platter and extend our sincere condolences to his
4family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
5further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Kirby Platter as an expression of
8our deepest sympathy.
