SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Anna Wall Scott of Urbana, who passed
4away on June 8, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Anna Scott was known for her political and social
6accomplishments; she enlisted in the United States Army after
7graduating from high school and served during World War II as
8one of the first members of the Women's Army Corps; she earned
9three degrees from the University of Illinois; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Anna Scott taught sociology at Parkland College
11for over 40 years; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Anna Scott was the first woman in the State to be
13elected to the Democratic State Central Committee; she served
14as vice chairwoman of the State Democratic Party with the late
15Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley and was a member of the
16Democratic National Committee, where she served as a delegate
17to the nominating convention that led to the election of
18President Jimmy Carter; later in her public career, she
19switched to the Republican Party; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Anna Scott was active in her community and a
21strong voice at Bethel AME Church; she desegregated the

1Champaign Department of Public Aid and was a charter member of
2the Urbana Human Relations Committee; she was the first black
3female commander of the American Legion Post 559 and worked
4tirelessly to honor veterans from every conflict and to
5advocate for their rights; she was dynamic and outspoken and an
6important voice for social change; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Anna Scott is survived by her son, Harvey Grant
8Wall; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Anna Wall Scott and extend our sincere condolences to her
12family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Anna Scott as an expression of our
16deepest sympathy.
