SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Frederick J. "Fred" Roberts Ph.D., who
4passed away on February 26, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Roberts was born in Philadelphia to Charles J.
6and Minnie E. Burdan Roberts on December 21, 1937; his early
7years were spent in Philadelphia and then northeastern
8Pennsylvania, where he graduated as valedictorian of both
9Dallas Senior High School and Wilkes University; he was awarded
10a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to attend Princeton University,
11where he earned both his master's and doctoral degrees in
12political science; while working on his doctoral thesis, he
13served as an intern for the Brookings Institution, doing
14research in metropolitan governance in New York City; he
15married Carlene Krueger in Normal on February 14, 1970; and
 
16    WHEREAS, From the fall of 1964 to the spring of 1968, Dr.
17Roberts was a full-time faculty member in the political science
18department at the University of Delaware in Newark; he taught
19introductory-level courses, allowing him to meet a broad
20spectrum of aspiring students, including future Vice President
21Joe Biden; and
 
22    WHEREAS, In the fall of 1968, Dr. Roberts joined the

1politics and government department at Illinois State
2University; he developed a new course on collective
3decision-making which he taught until his retirement in 2000;
4he was director of the internship program, sponsored the Model
5Illinois Government program, and served as graduate director;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Roberts was an avid reader and enjoyed
8bicycling, hiking, photography, and sports cars; he and Carlene
9enjoyed traveling and exploring new places, but especially
10Santa Fe, New Mexico; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Dr. Roberts was preceded in death by his wife of
1245 years, Carlene Krueger Roberts; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dr. Roberts is survived by his sister, Charlotte
14Roberts (Madison Mooney); his brother, David A. (Ruth) Roberts;
15his brother-in-law, Richard (Lynne) Krueger; his nieces and
16nephews, Keith Mooney, Melanie (John) Kinder, Charles
17(Ranelle) Mooney, Susan (Philip) Abrams, William (Jennifer)
18Roberts, Todd (Candee) Krueger, Victoria Krueger, and Jaime
19(Kyle) Wheelwright; and many great-nieces and great-nephews;
20therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
22ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

2condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
3him; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
