HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Elgin Public Museum of
4Natural History and Anthropology on the occasion of its 100th
5anniversary on November 12, 2020; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The mission of the Elgin Public Museum, a
7registered 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, is to enhance the
8knowledge of the natural sciences and anthropology through the
9use of exhibits and interactive experiences; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The purpose of the Elgin Public Museum is to
11promote a comprehension and appreciation of both the natural
12world and other cultures, both past and present, and to
13increase awareness of the consequences of the decisions human
14cultures have made through time; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Elgin Public Museum offers exhibits and
16educational programs with natural history and cultural themes
17for families, school groups, Scouts, clubs, organizations,
18homeschoolers, and anyone who wants to have fun while learning;
19and
 
20    WHEREAS, The Elgin Public Museum is situated within Lords
21Park, located on Elgin's east side, and is the only natural

1history museum in the Fox Valley area; its building was
2designed by noted architect David Postle in 1904; and
 
3    WHEREAS, During the Depression Era, the Elgin Public Museum
4served the community by providing a low cost way for visitors
5to forget the difficulties many were facing at the time; as a
6result, attendance remained high during this period; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Elgin Public Museum continued to serve the
8community and made history in 1996 when, under the leadership
9of Director Nancy Epping, it began the process of complying
10with the recently-passed Americans with Disabilities Act to
11offer greater accessibility; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Recently, the Elgin Public Museum has experienced
13a decrease in funding due to fallout from the Great Recession;
14despite this, it had an excellent year in 2019 and made great
15contributions to local education and tourism, which included
16130 school programs, Scout programs, and special events; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the Elgin Public
18Museum has strongly enforced mandatory masks and occupancy
19limits, so it can continue to provide crucial entertainment and
20distraction to the community, not unlike it did years ago
21during the Great Depression; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we congratulate the Elgin Public Museum of Natural History and
4Anthropology on its 100th anniversary and commend it for
5continuing to play such an important role in the Elgin
6community; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the members of the Elgin Public Museum of Natural
9History and Anthropology Board as an expression of our esteem
10and respect.
