HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Cherie
4Geraldine Patterson, who passed away on September 16, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson was born to Owen J. Sr. and Ruth
6H. Patterson on February 26, 1928; she attended Chicago Public
7Schools and loved clothes and sports and was a social
8butterfly; she was the prom queen of Englewood High School,
9where she graduated with honors at the age of 16 and enrolled
10in college the same year; she married James D. Steele and they
11settled in the Chatham neighborhood; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson earned a bachelor's degree from
13Northeastern Illinois University, followed by both a master's
14degree and a PhD in Public Administration; she was a life-long
15learner and passed her love of learning to her children and
16grandchildren; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson coached Little League Baseball,
18chaperoned field trips, drove her children and their friends to
19countless dance and swimming lessons, and attended PTA
20meetings; she loved to bowl and passed her love of the game to
21her children, enrolling them in bowling leagues at a young age;
22she organized her community around issues, sparking her

1interest in politics; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson joined Trinity United Church of
3Christ in January 1987; she was as committed to her church as
4she was committed to education and her family; she was ordained
5as a deacon in December 2002; and
 
6    WHEREAS, After the passing of her first husband, Cherie
7Patterson married Otis Mitchell, and, for 21 years, they
8traveled domestically and internationally, golfed, and became
9snow birds in Florida; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson was preceded in death by her
11first husband, James; her second husband, Otis; her parents;
12and her siblings, Phyllis Patterson, Ruth Wheatley, Elizabeth
13Taylor, Norma Sampson, Owen Patterson Jr., and Patricia
14Patterson; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson is survived by her children, John
16O. (Deborah) Steele Sr. and Diane C. Steele German; eight
17grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great
18grandchild; her siblings, George (Marie) Wheatley Sr., Erma
19Godfrey, and Choma (Marvalene) Patterson; and a host of
20extended family and friends; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE

1HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
2we mourn the passing of Cherie Geraldine Patterson and extend
3our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who
4knew and loved her; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Cherie Patterson as an expression of
7our deepest sympathy.
