HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The term Dystonia encompasses a broad group of
3debilitating, incurable neurological conditions in which
4scientists have not yet discovered a certain cause, making this
5illness extremely difficult to diagnose; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Nearly 250,000 Americans are living with
7dystonia, making it the third most common movement disorder,
8following essential tremor and Parkinson's disease; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The onset of dystonia is typically seen in early
10childhood, but it can also begin later in life during
11adolescence and adulthood; it has a lifelong span; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Currently, there is no cure for dystonia, only
13treatments to help ease symptoms, such as Botulinum toxin
14injections, deep brain stimulation, or other surgeries; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Recently, the Dystonia Coalition, a clinical
16research network for dystonia, has been established with
17support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders
18and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
19Office of Rare Disease Research as part of the Rare Disease
20Clinical Research Network; and

1    WHEREAS, The Dystonia Medical Research Foundation
2recognizes September as Dystonia Awareness Month, and a
3nationwide effort is being made to have the White House
4recognize September as Dystonia Awareness Month; therefore, be
5it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we recognize September 2019 as Dystonia Awareness Month and
9encourage research of this devastating condition in the hope
10that someday soon a cure is found.
