HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the General Assembly of the State
3of Illinois are saddened by the death of Staff Sergeant Edwin
4Herbert DazaChacon, formerly of Belleville, on February 13,
52006; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant DazaChacon was born in Bogota,
7Colombia on July 4, 1967; he graduated from Miami Sunset High
8School in Miami, Florida in 1986; he served two separate
9enlistments in the U.S. Army; at the time of his death, he had
10the rank of Staff Sergeant and was the NCOIC (Non-Commissioned
11Officer in Charge) of SOT-A team 708, HSC, 3rd Battalion, 7th
12Special Forces Group (A) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on
13deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring
14Freedom; and
 
15    WHEREAS, During his first enlistment, starting in 1990,
16Staff Sergeant DazaChacon served in the 82nd Airborne Division
17and was deployed to Iraq for Operation Desert Shield/Desert
18Storm; he was subsequently assigned to the U.S. Army Southern
19European Task Force in Vincenza, Italy and participated in
20deployments to Egypt, Rwanda/Uganda/Zaire, Bosnia, and
21Liberia; and
 
22    WHEREAS, After completing his initial enlistment in 1997,

1Staff Sergeant DazaChacon left active military service and
2relocated to Belleville; while in Belleville, he joined the
3U.S. Army Reserve and completed his Bachelor of Science in
4Instructional Design and Workforce Education at Southern
5Illinois University; during this time, he was employed as the
6Manager of Fleet Operations for Southwestern Bell in St. Louis,
7Missouri; due to his patriotism and undeniable calling to
8serve, he returned to active duty following the events of
9September 11, 2001; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant DazaChacon's military awards and
11decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army
12Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National
13Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal,
14the Southwest Asia Services Medal, the Kuwait Liberation Medal,
15the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Afghanistan
16Campaign Medal, the Non-commissioned Officer Professional
17Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Combat
18Infantryman's Badge, and the Senior Parachutist Wings; he was
19posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, the Purple
20Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Combat Action
21Badge; and
 
22    WHEREAS, The passing of Staff Sergeant DazaChacon has been
23deeply felt by many, especially his mother, Smila Chacon
24Valencia, and his sisters, Monique F. and Jessica A.

1DazaChacon; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
4SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of road
5on Illinois Route 2 from North Green Mountain Road to Shiloh
6Station Road as the "Staff Sergeant Edwin DazaChacon Memorial
7Road"; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
9is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
10State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
11giving notice of the name "Staff Sergeant Edwin DazaChacon
12Memorial Road"; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Staff Sergeant DazaChacon and the
15Secretary of Transportation.
