AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 5531

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 5531 on page 1, by
3replacing line 7 with the following:
 
4    "Sec. 22. Report of use of unpaid interns.
5    (a) In this Section:
6    "Intern" means an individual participating in an
7internship with an employer.
8    "Internship" means an employment relationship under which
9all of the following apply:
10        (1) the intern and the employer clearly understand that
11    there is no expectation of compensation;
12        (2) the internship provides training that is similar to
13    that which is given in an educational environment,
14    including the clinical and other hands-on training
15    provided by educational institutions;
16        (3) the internship is tied to the intern's formal
17    education program by integrated coursework or the receipt

1    of academic credit;
2        (4) the internship accommodates an intern's academic
3    commitments, if any, by corresponding to the academic
4    calendar;
5        (5) the internship's duration is limited to the period
6    during which the internship provides the intern with
7    beneficial learning;
8        (6) the intern's work complements, rather than
9    displaces, the work of paid employees, while providing
10    significant educational benefits to the intern; and
11        (7) the intern and the employer understand that the
12    internship is conducted without entitlement to a paid job
13    at the conclusion of the internship.
14    "Internship" also includes any relationship that the
15employer designates as an internship.
