SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Marvin "Marv" Harold Abrahamson, who
4passed away on August 28, 2018 at the age of 93; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Marv Abrahamson was born to Lillian and Joseph
6Abrahamson on March 13, 1925; the youngest of four children, he
7grew up in South Austin at Adams and Central; he attended
8Robert Emmett Elementary School and Austin High School, where
9he played guard on the varsity basketball team and graduated in
101943; after a semester at Wilbur Wright Junior College, he
11enlisted in the United States Navy; he served honorably in the
12Pacific and returned home in 1946; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Marv Abrahamson joined his father and brother,
14Elmer, in the family furrier business on Madison and Mayfield
15Streets; in the 1950s, the fur salon moved to 122 North Marion
16in Oak Park, where it remained well into the 21st century; in
171978, a third generation was welcomed into Abrahamson's Furs,
18when Marv's son, Bruce, joined the business; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Marv Abrahamson was a proud Chicagoan and Oak
20Parker and was a member of the Oak Park River Forest Rotary and
21the Oak Park Tennis Club, where he was noted for his "deftness
22at switching the racket to his other hand and scoring at the

1net"; he loved basketball and was a Chicago Bulls season ticket
2holder for nearly half a century; he supported the Hephzibah
3Children's Association and the Southern Poverty Law Center; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Marv Abrahamson was considered the unofficial
5"Mayor of Marion Street" and encouraged other business owners
6in the area as they built their businesses; always caring and
7smiling, he was a regular at Kevil's Restaurant in Forest Park,
8where patrons looked forward to seeing him and Mary Ann;
9affectionately known as "The High Roller," he also enjoyed
10trips to Las Vegas with other store owners; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Marv Abrahamson was preceded in death by his
12parents; his brothers, Elmer and Melvin; and his sister,
13Sylvia; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Marv Abrahamson is survived by his companion of
15nearly 40 years, Mary Ann Jurgus; his sons, Bruce and Terry;
16his daughter-in-law, Vicki Lafer Abrahamson; his son-in-law,
17David Branch; his grandsons, Joey, Sam, and Jake; and his
18granddaughters, Charlotte and Jenny; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Marvin "Marv" Harold Abrahamson and extend our sincere
22condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
