SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" Johnson
4Martin of Watseka, who passed away on October 21, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Maggie Martin was born in Bay City, Michigan to
6Mercedes (McMullen) and J. Lennart Johnson on July 12, 1941;
7she attended the University of Michigan and earned her Master
8of Music in Piano Performance; she married Richard "Dick"
9Martin at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago on August
1018, 1973; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Maggie Martin was an accomplished pianist and also
12played the violin and cello; early in her career, she taught at
13both the Interlochen School of Performing Arts and Central
14Michigan University; she then moved to Chicago and started her
15own company, where she sold computers; in 1989, she became the
16General Manager of WGFA Radio; she took the station to the full
1750,000 watts it is today and made several positive
18improvements; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Maggie Martin was named Chicago Businesswoman of
20the Year in the late 1960s; in the early 1980s, she, along with
21other leading women in the community, began the Iroquois Arts
22and Education Council to bring string, vocal, and piano lessons

1to the community; she served as Chairperson of the Iroquois
2Memorial Hospital (IMH) Development Council from 1991 until
32006; she served on the IMH Board of Trustees from 2003 until
42014; she was also on the Board of Governors at the County Club
5of Florida in Boynton Beach, Florida; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Maggie Martin enjoyed tennis and snow skiing; she
7also picked up the game of golf and had six holes in one; she
8was an avid reader; she and Dick enjoyed vacationing in Delray
9Beach, Florida during the winters; she was kind, generous,
10spiritual, and loving and left her mark on all who knew her;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Maggie Martin was preceded in death by her parents
13and one grandchild; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Maggie Martin is survived by her husband, Dick;
15her children, Sam (Liz) Martin, Nancy (Mark) Burns, Daniel
16Martin, Gregory Martin, and Stacey Smith; her stepmother,
17Bonnie Johnson; her sister, Debra Gruber; her brothers, Fred
18Johnson, Thomas (Brenda) Teeple, and Pat (Nancy) Johnson; her
1912 grandchildren; her 10 great-grandchildren; and her many
20aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
22ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

2sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
3and loved her; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Maggie Martin as an expression of
6our deepest sympathy.
