SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Charles William "Bill" Smith D.V.M. of
4Champaign, who passed away on August 31, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Smith was born in Pontiac to George and Gladys
6(Eppel) Smith on May 21, 1940; he received his Doctor of
7Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Illinois
8College of Veterinary Medicine in 1965, and a master of science
9degree in 1972; in 1975, he completed a rigid examination to
10become a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary
11Surgeons, making him board certified in surgery; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dr. Smith began his career in Dundee and Rockford
13and then served in the Army Veterinary Corps for two years; he
14returned to the University of Illinois as an instructor in
151969; in 1978, he was appointed chief of small animal surgery
16at the college; by 1980, he was a professor of veterinary
17clinical medicine, and he taught orthopedic surgery; he taught
18at the college for 31 years before his retirement in August
192000; during retirement, he worked as a veterinary consultant
20in various practices mainly in Bradley and Bloomington; he
21loved teaching students, interns, and residents; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Dr. Smith was the recipient of the Norden

1Outstanding Teacher Award in 1977, 1983, and 1991; in 1966, the
2members of the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association
3recognized him for his impact on the careers of his students;
4in 2000, he received the Campus Award for Excellence in
5Professional and Graduate Student Teaching; in 2014, the ACVS
6Foundation awarded him the distinction of Honored Mentor as
7colleagues acknowledged the outstanding mentorship and support
8he provided them in their professional development; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Smith was a member of Cornerstone Baptist
10Church of Savoy, where he faithfully served as a teacher, a
11moderator, and a deacon; he enjoyed Bible Study Fellowship and
12was a leader for several years; he also went on two medical
13mission trips to Honduras; his faith was important to him; he
14enjoyed woodworking as a hobby; he was a kind, considerate, and
15humble person, devoted to his family; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents and
17his brother, Pete; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. Smith is survived by his wife, Ann; his
19children, Michael Smith, Steve (Joann) Smith, Becky (Steve)
20Amjad, and Marcia (Brian) Schoudel; his grandchildren, Andrew,
21Marissa, and Aaron Smith, Emma, Sarah, Ben, and Molly Amjad,
22Carter and Madison Smith, and Jacob and Tyler Schoudel; his
23brothers, Jim and Robert (Sharon) Smith; and his many nieces

1and nephews; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
3ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
4Charles William "Bill" Smith D.V.M. and extend our sincere
5condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
6him; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the family of Dr. Smith as an expression of our
9deepest sympathy.
