SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dean Emerson Grant of North Barrington,
4who passed away on May 10, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dean Grant was born in Concord, Massachusetts to
6Dr. Roald and Lydia (Hoersch) Grant on October 3, 1943; he grew
7up in Massachusetts, Maryland, and Connecticut before his
8family settled in New York City in 1952; he graduated from
9Collegiate High School in New York City in 1961, where he
10played football; one of his first summer jobs as a high school
11student in New York was working as an ambulance driver; he
12married Jeanne Hilda Conklin in Philadelphia on December 23,
131964 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965;
14he received a Master of Business Administration from the
15University of Chicago in 1967; he worked abroad at Saint Thomas
16Hospital in London, England from 1969 to 1970; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Dean Grant had a 36-year career as a hospital
18administrator at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, where he rose
19through the ranks to become president and CEO of Alexian
20Brothers Health Systems; he retired in 2007; he co-founded and
21served as the CEO of ExecuMed in 1981; he was also CEO of
22Critical Care Inc. at Alexian; and

1    WHEREAS, As administrator at Alexian Brothers, Dean Grant
2oversaw a period of enormous growth for the network of
3hospitals in Illinois, California, New Jersey, and Missouri; he
4helped make Alexian Brothers a household name beyond its base
5in Elk Grove; he was a driving force behind the decision in
62000 to purchase the naming rights to the AAA minor league
7baseball stadium in Schaumburg, which was the home for the
8Schaumburg Flyers from its opening through the end of the 2010
9season, and is now known as Boomers Stadium and the home of the
10Schaumburg Boomers baseball team; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Dean Grant authored How to Negotiate Physicians'
12Contracts in 1979 and was the founder and publisher of American
13Nursing News, also known as ANN-Midwest in 1980; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dean Grant was an avid traveler and attended a
15world health congress event in Bolivia; he also visited China,
16Germany, Britain, Europe, Vietnam, Thailand, and many
17countries in South America; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dean Grant was a sailing enthusiast in his youth
19and built a sailboat from scratch at his family's summer
20cottage in Sayville, Long Island at the age of 15; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Dean Grant was a devoted husband and father who
22took a deep interest in the lives, interests, and career

1development of his family; he was also a dedicated fan of the
2Chicago Bears; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Dean Grant was preceded in death by his parents;
4his siblings, Roald Jr., Gale, and Danae; his nephew, Keith
5Owen Stewart; and his brother-in-law, Lloyd Conklin; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dean Grant is survived by his wife, Jeanne; his
7daughter, Deanna Lynn Cummings (Micky); his son, Donald D.
8Grant (Susan); his grandsons, Gary Michael and Grant Edward
9Cummings, and James Emerson Grant; his granddaughters, Delaney
10Lynn Cummings and Cheryl Lee Grant; his sister-in-law, Mai Tran
11Conklin; his nephew, Keith; his nieces, Ingrid Kirschbaum (and
12her daughter), Katherine Odell, Karin Scandella, Erin Conklin,
13and Kelly Tidwell (Jay) and their children, Josh, Becca, and
14Kat; and his nephews, Erik Kirschbaum and his children, Steven,
15Julie, Lukas, and Finn, and Gregg Stewart; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Dean Emerson Grant, and extend our sincere condolences to his
19family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
20further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the family of Dean Grant as an expression of our
