SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of James Earl "Jimmy" Harlan, who passed
4away on May 14, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, James Harlan was born in Meridian, Mississippi to
6Pastor Herbert Sr. and Florence Harlan on December 16, 1946; he
7attended Lawson Grammar School and Harrison High School in
8Chicago; he was a member of the Greater Galilee Baptist Church
9of Chicago and joined the U.S. Army in 1967; he served during
10the Vietnam War as a specialist 4th class military policeman;
11he married Debra on December 22, 1985; and
 
12    WHEREAS, James Harlan retired after many years at Sanford
13Inc.; after retirement, he worked at Proviso East High School
14until 2015, where he was affectionately known as "Old School";
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, James Harlan was the co-founder of Answer Inc.; he
17was president of the Just for Men support group and assistant
18to the cancer support group at the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans
19Administration Hospital; he was recognized as a veteran by the
20Cook County Commissioner; and
 
21    WHEREAS, James Harlan was a member of the Jordan Temple

1Baptist Church in Hillside; he enjoyed watching sports,
2especially football and basketball; he also enjoyed "stepping"
3with his wife and spending time with his family and friends;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, James Harlan was preceded in death by his parents
6and his brother, Herbert Harlan Jr.; and
 
7    WHEREAS, James Harlan is survived by his wife, Debra Vines;
8his sons, Mark (Temekia) Shambry and Jason Harlan; his brother,
9Bill Harlan; extended family member, John (LaVonne) Baggett;
10and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14James Earl "Jimmy" Harlan, and extend our sincere condolences
15to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
16it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of James Harlan as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
