SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Melva Joanne Shephard of Woodstock, who
4passed away on April 28, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Melva Shephard was born in Meadville,
6Pennsylvania to Joseph and Hettie May (Miller) McClaughry on
7September 25, 1929; her family moved to Lancaster, California
8when she was an infant; she graduated with honors from the
9University of California, Berkeley with a degree in
10microbiology; she married Edward Eugene "Gene" Shephard in
11Berkeley on June 22, 1952; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Melva Shephard worked full-time in administrative
13positions until her retirement in 2001; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Melva Shephard was an avid reader and a constant
15and life-long learner; she enjoyed being engaged in thoughtful
16conversations with her children and grandchildren; she and Gene
17lived for four years in Ioninna, Greece and made numerous trips
18to Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, and most of
19Europe; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Melva Shephard was preceded in death by her
21parents; her husband of almost 59 years, Gene; her brothers,

1Paul and Bob; her sister, Kathryn; and her grandson, Anders
2Swanson; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Melva Shephard is survived by her children,
4Rebecca Shephard, Steve Shephard (Debbie), and Amy Swanson
5(Scott); her grandchildren, Elizabeth Jordy, Taylor Shephard,
6Samuel Shephard (Colleen Shuda), Marta Haight (John), and Bjorn
7Swanson; and her great-grandson, Jeremiah; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10Melva Joanne Shephard, and extend our sincere condolences to
11her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
12further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Melva Shephard as an expression of
15our deepest sympathy.
