SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Ralph D. Glenn of Mattoon, who passed
4away on April 6, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn was born in Lexington to Robert and
6Thelma (Derry) Glenn on October 15, 1929; he graduated from
7Yorkville High School in 1947 and attended college at Illinois
8Wesleyan University from 1947 to 1949, where he played football
9and baseball; he earned his bachelor's degree and his Juris
10Doctor from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; he
11was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1953 and served in the U.S.
12Army from 1953 to 1955; he completed his initial training at
13Ft. Riley, Kansas and then served as an intelligence officer
14and investigator with the Army's Counter Intelligence Corps at
15Ft. Holabird in Maryland; he was recognized as an Outstanding
16Trainee at Ft. Riley and received a commendation for exemplary
17service from the Counter Intelligence Corps; he married Shirley
18Rudman on September 10, 1955; and
 
19    WHEREAS, In 1955, Ralph Glenn and Shirley moved to Mattoon,
20and Ralph joined the law firm of Craig & Craig; he became an
21assistant state's attorney in 1958; in 1960, he was elected
22State's Attorney of Coles County, a position he held until
231968; he published Illinois Misdemeanor Forms, a book widely

1used by area prosecutors at that time; in 1966, he co-founded
2the Glenn & Logue Law Firm; in 1968, he was chosen to serve as
3president of the Illinois State's Attorneys Association; he
4continued practicing law until the end of 2014, when he retired
5after a 59-year career; during his career, he argued cases at
6the Circuit, Appellate, and Supreme Court levels, as well as
7before the U.S. District and U.S. Tax Courts; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn coached local youth baseball teams and
9served as the Commissioner for Mattoon's Jaycee Baseball League
10for 20 years; he received the Pop Warner Award, and in 1967,
11the baseball field at Vanlaningham Park was named the Ralph
12Glenn Field; early in his life, he was named Young Man of the
13Year by the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn was a member of the Central Community
15Church, the First Presbyterian Church, the Mattoon Jaycees, the
16Association of Commerce, the American Legion, and the Moose
17Club; he served on the E-7 Hospital Association Board from 1970
18to 1979, which oversaw the development, organization,
19administration, and opening of the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health
20Center in 1977; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn was a member of the Mattoon Golf &
22Country Club for many years and enjoyed playing golf with his
23wife and in men's leagues; on two occasions, he shot holes in

1one on the club course; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn was a lifelong fan of the Chicago
3Cubs, and he often told the story of how he and a group of ten
4friends traveled in one car, slept overnight on the sidewalk
5outside of Wrigley Field, and then paid $1 each for bleacher
6seats to attend game 7 of the 1945 World Series against the
7Detroit Tigers; 71 years later, he was watching with his family
8from his home in Mattoon as his beloved Cubs won the World
9Series in 2016; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn was preceded in death by his parents;
11his wife, Shirley; his brothers, Robert and Howard Glenn; his
12sisters, Dorothy Felker and Mary Quinton; and his sons-in-law,
13Bruce Scott Doty and Clifford Brown; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn is survived by his children, James
15(Laura) Glenn, Michael (Bridgit) Glenn, Cheryl (Douglas)
16Meyer, and Sharon Brown; his grandchildren, Kyle Glenn, Lindsey
17Glenn, Michelle (Luke) Wilson, Miranda (Jeremy) Sullivan,
18Kevin Glenn, Andi Glenn, Andrew Meyer, Todd Meyer, Christina
19Meyer, and Nicholas Doty; his great-grandchild, Maddie
20Sullivan; and his sister, Lois Murray; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
22ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

1Ralph D. Glenn, and extend our sincere condolences to his
2family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
3further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Ralph Glenn as an expression of our
6deepest sympathy.
