SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Catherine "Kay" Mary Bartsch Hanley of
4Wilmette, who passed away on September 27, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Catherine Hanley was born on April 25, 1923,
6during the Roaring Twenties, and she fondly remembered her
7parents enjoying the night life in Chicago and spending Sunday
8afternoons with her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins;
9she grew up during the Depression, but she was always grateful
10for a happy and stable family; she graduated from St. Francis
11Xavier in Wilmette and New Trier High School; she then attended
12the University of Illinois, where she joined the Alpha Xi Omega
13sorority; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Catherine Hanley moved to Washington, D.C. to help
15with the war effort; during her time there, she worked as a
16bookkeeper for the United States Navy and reconciled the
17accounting records for ships at sea, witnessed FDR's funeral
18procession, and experienced the joy of VJ Day in the nation's
19capital; and
 
20    WHEREAS, After the war, Catherine returned to Chicago and
21continued to work as a bookkeeper, first for Encyclopedia
22Britannica, then for a large international beef cattle company,

1and finally, for a large North Shore dental practice, where she
2remained until age 80; in 1962, she met John "Pat" Hanley
3through a mutual friend; they married and had two children; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Catherine Hanley loved reading and history but
5focused on living in the present with her family; she was
6always optimistic about the future and was unfailingly
7energized by an afternoon drive to see her beloved Lake
8Michigan or by talking about Chicago's rich traditions and
9pastimes; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Catherine Hanley was an avid Cubs fan and attended
11some of the most important games in the history of the
12franchise, including a 1945 World Series game and the famous
13Babe Ruth "called shot" game in the 1932 Series; since the Cubs
14failed to win either of those championships, she had to wait
15nearly 80 years to watch them win a World Series title; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Catherine Hanley was the beloved wife of the late
17Pat Hanley; the loving mother of Beth (Chris) Dunn and John F.
18(Amy) Hanley; the proud grandmother of Jack, Patrick, and Katie
19Dunn and Bridge, Ellie, and Claire Hanley; the dear sister of
20the late Jack (Peg) Bartsch; and the fond aunt to many nieces
21and nephews; therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2Catherine "Kay" Mary Bartsch Hanley and extend our sincere
3condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
4her; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Catherine Bartsch as an expression
7of our deepest sympathy.
