SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois General Assembly wish
3to honor those who have served our country with distinction and
4valor in the United States Armed Forces; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the
6President of the United States to any member of the U.S. Armed
7Forces or any civilian national of the United States who, while
8serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of
9the U.S. Armed Forces after April 5, 1917 has been wounded,
10killed, or who has died or may hereafter die after being
11wounded; and
 
12    WHEREAS, In honor of the ultimate sacrifice paid by so many
13of our troops throughout history, it is fitting to dedicate a
14section of Interstate 80 as the "Purple Heart Highway" as a
15humble gesture of thanks to our troops for the freedoms we
16enjoy on a daily basis; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In accordance with the words spoken over the
18fallen at Gettysburg by a former representative from Illinois,
19let us never forget our fallen heroes; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

1CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Interstate 80 from its
2intersection with Interstate 55 to its intersection with South
3LaGrange Road as the "Purple Heart Highway"; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
5is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
6State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
7giving notice of the name "Purple Heart Highway"; and be it
8further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
11Transportation.
