HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Shirley
4McCombs, who passed away on October 2, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs was born in Schuyler County to
6Harry and Stella Derry Hunter on June 30, 1937; she married
7Charles H. McCombs on May 30, 1956; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs will be remembered for her
9lifelong passion for politics; throughout her political
10career, she held a variety of positions; in 1975, she served as
11the Supervisor of the District Office Allotment for the
12Illinois House of Representatives under Speaker William
13Redmond; in 1983, she was promoted to House Fiscal Officer by
14Speaker Michael Madigan; one year later, she was elected as the
15Menard County Democratic Chairman and served as a delegate to
16the state convention; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In 1986, Shirley McCombs was elected State Central
18Committeewoman and, in 1988, she received the State Democratic
19Party Chairman's award for her dedication to the Democratic
20Party; she also served as an Assistant Whip of the Illinois
21Delegation at the Democratic National Convention and as an
22elector at the Presidential Electoral College; and

1    WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs was known for her enthusiastic
2support for women in politics and other leadership positions;
3in 2016, she was able to cast an Electoral College vote for
4presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and regarded it as the
5most important event in her life; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs volunteered for numerous state,
7national, and local election campaigns; she also volunteered
8for various community and church projects and contributed to
9the founding of the Menard County Tourism Council; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs was preceded in death by her
11parents, Harry and Stella Derry Hunter, and her siblings, Doris
12Ebbing, Kenneth Hunter, Donny Hunter, Linda Moon, Harry Hunter,
13Charles Hunter, and Harriet K. Hunter; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs is survived by her daughter, Robin
15Mathieu; her grandchildren, Vickie Mathieu and Jackie
16Tserpelis; three great-grandchildren; her siblings, Nelda
17Schisler, Susan McFarlin, Larry Hunter, Lois Mccombs, and
18Deloris Witherall; her sisters-in-law, Phyllis Ernius, Doris
19Thomas, and Betty Hunter; and numerous nieces, nephews, and
20cousins; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE

1HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
2mourn the passing of Shirley McCombs and extend our sincere
3condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
4her; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Shirley McCombs as an expression of
7our deepest sympathy.
