HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, John E. McGovern III, a native of Illinois born in
3Chicago, displayed from his earliest years a high level of
4intelligence and an orientation towards politics and history;
5he attended Lake Forest Country Day School, boarded at
6Deerfield Academy, and was admitted to Princeton University;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, As a Princeton student in history, John McGovern
9passed through bicker into the Ivy Club, and also joined Sigma
10Alpha Epsilon; after graduating with honors in history and
11American Studies, he attended the Pritzker School of Law at
12Northwestern University, earning a J.D. degree; he passed the
13bar exam and was admitted to the Illinois bar; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Continuing his interest in politics, John
15McGovern took positions as press secretary with the Illinois
16Republican Party from 1994 to 1998 and as campaign manager for
17then-U.S. Representative Mark Kirk in 2000; and
 
18    WHEREAS, As part of his continued professional
19advancement, John McGovern affiliated himself with the Office
20of the U.S. Speaker of the House; he combined his service as a
21high-level congressional aide with the development of
22increasing dexterity in U.S. politics as the executive director

1of Keep Our Majority PAC; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Continuing his work on Capitol Hill, John McGovern
3was a senior advisor to U.S. Representative Bob Dold from 2010
4through 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, As a senior political strategist, John McGovern
6successfully turned to private equity; he served for
7approximately seven years at Resolute Consulting LLC, and as a
8principal in the Thurston Group as a manager of strategic
9initiatives; and
 
10    WHEREAS, As a civic leader, John McGovern was asked by his
11friends and acquaintances to take on a variety of additional
12responsibilities; he served on the board of directors of the
13Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago and, at the time of his death,
14was serving as vice president of the Auxiliary Board of the Art
15Institute of Chicago; he served on many other boards and
16advisory councils, including panels that provide leadership
17and financial backing for the Field Museum and the Rush Medical
18Center; and
 
19    WHEREAS, In news that shocked and saddened those close to
20him, John McGovern died on Friday, July 13, 2018, at the age of
21only 48; and

1    WHEREAS, John McGovern leaves behind his wife of seven
2years, Wentworth Caldwell McGovern; his sons, Caldwell Armour
3McGovern and Watson Greeley McGovern; and many other family
4members and friends; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
6HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7feel a sense of sadness and loss at John McGovern's death, and
8we mourn his passing; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to his widow, Wentworth Caldwell McGovern, as a
11symbol of our sadness and sense of loss.
