HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the accomplishments of Jorge
4Ramirez, president of the Chicago Federation of Labor and a
5vice president of the American Federation of Labor and Congress
6of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO); and
 
7    WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez has served as an officer with the
8Chicago Federation of Labor since July of 2006 and was elected
9the CFL's first Latino president in July of 2010; in February
10of 2015, he was elected to the AFL-CIO Executive Council as a
11vice president; he is also the Chairman of the Board of
12Managers for ST Acquisitions Holdings, which purchased the
13Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Reader, straightdope.com, and
14Answers Media in July of 2017, making him the first Latino
15chairman of a major media corporation; he is also a board
16member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez earned his first union card in 1988
18through the United Food and Commercial Workers International
19Union Local 100A, now Local 1546; he worked his way up,
20ultimately serving as UFCW Local 1546's executive director
21before joining the CFL; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez serves on executive and advisory

1boards for labor, civic, and community organizations across the
2city and around the country, which allows him to represent the
3interests of labor and protect the fundamental rights of all
4workers; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez works with the Metropolitan Pier and
6Exposition Authority, the Chicago Sports Commission, Choose
7Chicago, and Chicago Infrastructure Trust and Navy Pier, Inc.
8to bring jobs and expand the region's economy by growing and
9improving the city's manufacturing, infrastructure, tourism,
10and trade show opportunities; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez also serves on the boards of the
12Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, the United Way of Metropolitan
13Chicago, the Archdiocese of Chicago Office for Immigrant
14Affairs, the St. Joseph College Seminary, and other civic and
15community groups; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez graduated from the University of
17Texas at El Paso with a double major in marketing and computer
18information systems; he later went on to receive his Juris
19Doctor from the Chicago-Kent College of Law; he and his wife,
20Catrina, have four sons; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
22HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

1recognize the accomplishments of Jorge Ramirez, and wish him
2success in all his future endeavors; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to Jorge Ramirez as a symbol of our respect and
5esteem.
