HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, In 1983, President Ronald Reagan designated
3November as Alzheimer's Awareness Month nationally; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative
5disease that causes a person to progressively lose their memory
6and overall cognitive function over time; Alzheimer's robs a
7person of their short-term and long-term memory and has a
8significant effect on their loved ones; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of
10dementia, accounting for 60 to 80% of all dementia cases;
11dementia is a general term to describe a severe decline in
12mental ability that interferes with daily life; and
 
13    WHEREAS, There are currently 5.7 million people living with
14Alzheimer's in the United States, and the Alzheimer's
15Association projects that number to grow to 14 million by 2050;
16and
 
17    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of
18death in the United States and kills more people than breast
19cancer and prostate cancer combined; according to the
20Alzheimer's Association, one out of every three seniors dies of
21Alzheimer's disease; and

1    WHEREAS, Someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's
2or some form of dementia every 65 seconds; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Alzheimer's Association estimates that
4Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia will cost
5people in the United States a combined $277 billion in 2018;
6they also state that early and accurate diagnosis of
7Alzheimer's could save up to $7.9 trillion in medical costs;
8and
 
9    WHEREAS, No cure is currently available for Alzheimer's
10disease, and the approximate lifetime cost of care for a person
11living with Alzheimer's is $341,840; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14declare November of 2018 as "Alzheimer's Awareness Month"
15within the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the Alzheimer's Association - Illinois Chapter.
